Top 3 F1 battles of the year 2022

Overtaking in F1 is never easy. This year it has been made easier by the rule changes and for once this seems to have actually helped. To commemorate this achievement we have put together the top 3 F1 battles of the year. Each has a link to the Video so you can relive the moment and then discuss below if we got this right or not… enjoy!

  1. Hamilton vs Leclerc - Silverstone (FYI skip to 5:50)
Leclerc is given the impossible job by Ferrari here. Not only does he have to fend off a charging Hamilton at his home Grand Prix, but he has to do it with much older tyres by his team. He gives it a good go, managing to last almost a whole lap, and what a lap it was. The best moment by far was him hanging it around the outside of Hamilton at - . Now that is brave after what happened last year.

  2. Alonso vs Vettel - Suzuka (FYI skip to 5:53)
Unfortunately as it was the last lap there isn’t any good outside angles of this, as the F1 TV director must show us the winner boringly crossing the line alone instead of actual on track action. Luckily the onboard cameras capture some of this battle. It’s the last lap, Vettel clearly struggling, Alonso has been hounding Vettel lap after lap, and then suddenly a lunge at the last chicane by Alonso. It was nail biting stuff. Both of these two greats keeping the throttle pinned to the line side by side. It was so close and would have been amazing to watch live, at least these on-boards aren’t half bad.

  3. Verstappen vs Leclerc - Saudi Arabia
This was a tough one to choose between the battles at Saudi or Bahrain, but Saudi won for us. It’s got to be one of the scariest street tracks to have been created in the modern era and this battle really helps sell that. Going through turns 22, 23, 24 and 25 (which are some of the scariest corners ever) nose to tail, then Verstappen locking up so he doesn’t go over the DRS line first into the last turn 27 is great stuff. The way the DRS line is so decisive every lap in this battle is perfect. It is undeniably great entertainment - this is the way DRS should be used at every track.
